The 2026 Medical Training Survey (MTS) is now open, giving doctors in training across Australia the opportunity to help shape the future of medical education by sharing their experiences of training, workplace culture and supervision.

Colleges, employers, the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and medical associations draw on MTS results to identify strengths and areas for improvement in medical training, inform accreditation and workforce planning. Agencies like the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA) and the Australian Medical Association (AMA) use MTS data in advocacy to help to drive positive changes for current and future trainees. Trainees use MTS data to shape their choice of specialty and training site.
The survey gives trainees the chance to share their experiences of training around quality and access to education, workplace culture, supervision and wellbeing, identifying where improvements are needed and where positive practices can be expanded.
With historically strong response rates, the MTS is a proven reference point for trainee experiences. Chair of the Medical Board of Australia, Dr Susan O’Dwyer, said ‘the MTS response rate is extraordinary and shows that trainees recognise the MTS gives them a voice that the sector wants to hear.’
The 2026 survey features a streamlined design to make participation easier, while continuing to collect robust, high-quality data on medical training experiences. Most doctors in training will find the MTS after they pay to renew their medical registration this year. The MTS is shown to interns and international medical graduates as a task in their Ahpra portal.
The MTS now features seven years’ longitudinal data, making it Australia’s most comprehensive source of information on the experiences of medical training in Australia.

There are five versions of the survey, tailored to the different groups of trainees: interns, prevocational and unaccredited trainees, international medical graduates (with provisional or limited registration), specialist GP trainees and specialist non-GP trainees.
About the MTS
The MTS is a national, annual, profession-wide survey of all doctors in training in Australia. It is safe and confidential for doctors in training to take part.
The MTS is run by the Medical Board of Australia and Ahpra and was developed collaboratively with doctors in training, specialist medical colleges, jurisdictions, postgraduate medical councils, Australian Indigenous Doctors' Association, Australian Medical Council, Australian Medical Association, NSW Medical Council, Doctors' Health Services and other stakeholders.
